Introduction to the Bar Course LLM

The Bar Course LLM at Northumbria University is designed to support students in acquiring the necessary knowledge and practical skills crucial to practice at the modern Bar. The course replicates professional practice more closely than ever, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the foundational areas of pupillage and early practice.

Course Overview

The Bar Course LLM is a 2-year part-time program that includes the study of Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, Advocacy, Conferencing, Drafting, Opinion Writing, and Legal Research. The course also covers Professional Ethics, which equips students with the knowledge required for the Professional Ethics assessment on the Bar Course and provides the foundation for further assessment during pupillage.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally have:

• A minimum of a 2:1 honors degree in Law, or a minimum of a Commendation in the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
• Applicants with a 2:2 honors degree or a Pass in the GDL will be considered exceptionally on an individual basis
• Academic qualifications must satisfy the requirements outlined by the Bar Standards Board
• Applicants that hold, or are completing a non-UK/ROI degree or conversion course, must apply to the Bar Standards Boards for a Certificate of Academic Standing

• Additional costs include the Bar Standards Board fee, Inn membership fee, and costs associated with attending qualifying sessions
